title: Old Beijing Hutongs
date: Tuesday, 29 December 2009
time:19:42
People say that the real culture of Beijing is the 'culture of the Hutong' and the 'culture of the courtyard'. How true that is. Often, it is Beijing's winding Hutongs that attract tourists from home and abroad rather than the high-rise buildings and large mansions.

Hutongs came from the Mongolian language about 700 years ago. The original Mongolian word was hottog, meaning water well." In other words, it means a place where people live, because people always gather where there is water. Today in Beijing, the word hutong means a small alleyway or lane. They are typical of the old part of Beijing and are formed by lines of siheyuan (coutyard house) (a compound made up of rooms around a courtyard) in which most Beijing residents used to live.

The word "hutong" (narrow alleys) is Mongolian in origin, meaning a "water well". In the old time with the digging of new wells, came the new communities. Later it was referred to as narrow streets or lanes formed by quadrangles. The word " hutong" with the meaning of narrow lanes was formed during the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century when the Mongols, led by Genghis Khan, occupied Beijing, then the capital of the Jin Dynasty.

In 1260 Kubla Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, established the Yuan Dynasty. Kubla Khan chooses Beijing as his capital. During the takeover by the Mongols, the old city had been largely demolished, and so he decided to rebuild the city. When the new city was finished, there were clear definitions of streets, lanes and hutongs. A 36 meter wide road was called a "big street". An 18 meter wide one a "small street", and a 9 meter wide lane was called a "hutong". Surrounding the Imperial Palace, hutongs were established throughout the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. Most of the hutongs we see today were built during the Ming and Qing.

You only still find a very few hutongs preserved from the Yuan Dynasty One kind of hutongs, usually referred to as the regular hutong, was near the palace to the east and west and arranged in orderly fashion along the streets. Most of the residents of these hutongs were imperial kinsmen and aristocrats. Another kind, the simple and crude hutong, was mostly located far to the north and south of the palace.

The residents were merchants and other ordinary people. Existed as early as hundreds of years ago, narrow lanes, or hutongs were common in ancient Beijing. In the past, several thousand lanes, alleys and quadrangles formed residential areas for ordinary people living in the capital. Today, as the city develops into an international metropolis, its lanes and alleyways, occupying one third of the city proper, still serve as dwellings for half the total urban population.

title: Terracotta Warriors and Horses
date: Monday, 28 December 2009
time:01:14

i think most of you must have some ideas about the Terracotta Warriors of China by the film "Mummy 3". Sure, it is worth your visit to see how those warriors had been guiding their emperor for thousands of years!!! Please, you can see each other face to face!!

A terracotta army guarding , the tomb of Qin Shihuang, which lures travelers from all over the world. In a quest for immortality and eternal power, China's first emperor chose to have himself buried with some 8,000 life-size, intricately carved soldiers, horses, and chariots. Discovered by farmers digging a well in 1974, the terracotta army then wore painted uniforms, but exposure to the air and sun has turned them black.

Terracotta Warriors and Horses - Ranking as one of China's and the world's top historical sights, it houses around 8,000 life-size pottery warriors and horses and chariots, ready to defend their emperor's immortal soul. The Terracotta Warriors are not to be missed by any visitor to China, it is the must go attraction in Xi'an. The warriors stand guard in battle formation over Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum which has yet to be excavated. Their discovery in 1974 by local farmers was perhaps the most significant archeological discovery of the 20th Century. Work is ongoing at this 22,000 square meter site, which houses around 8,000 life-size pottery warriors and horses. The 2000 year old site has fast become the main attraction in Lintong County, Shaanxi province.

Every figure differs from those around in facial features and expression, clothing, hairstyle, and gestures. The horsemen, the longbow bearers, the archers and the senior officers and generals were positioned in strict accordance with the ancient directives on the Art of War. Many of the figures originally held real weapons of the time, such as bronze swords, longbows, arrows, spears, dagger-axes and other long-shafted weapons. Surface treatment of the weapons made them resistant to rust and corrosion so that after being buried for over 2000 years they were still sharp.

Standing in the vaults, you would be amazed by such a grand ancient army formation, which would transport you back to the ancient warring states period. The tomb is a treasury for the Chinese people, and for the whole world as well.

title: Chinese Private Garden -- Yuyuan Garden
date: Sunday, 20 December 2009
time:22:24
Chinese Private Garden -- Yuyuan Garden Shanghai
Yuyuan Garden, located in the center of Shanghai's Old Town and next door to Mandarin Gardens Bazaar, is considered one of the the city's finest, most lavish Chinese gardens. A traditional private Chinese garden park, Yuyuan Garden is replete with beautiful pavilions (it has some 30 Ming (CE 1368-1644) and Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasty pavilions), lotus ponds, stone bridges and - of course - rock formations. The garden park was built in typical Suzhou style (i.e., the city of Suzhouin Jiangsu Province, not the city of Suzhou in Anhui Province) in CE 1559, during the reign (CE 1521-1566) of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty by a former treasurer of Sichuan Province, Pan Yunduan, in honor of his father. Considered the best garden in Southeast China, Yuyuan Garden has maintained its classic beauty over the centuries.

Yuyuan Garden is believed to be built in the Ming Dynasty more than 400 years ago. Built in traditional Chinese style with numerous rock and tree garden areas, ponds, dragon-lined walls and numerous doorways and zigzagging bridges separating the various garden areas and pavilions.

The garden park includes such highlights as the Hall of Jade Magnificence, the Hall of Heralding Spring, the Gathering the Moon Pavilion, the Pavilon of Spring, the Inner Garden, the Lotus Pool, and the Grand Rockery, to name only a few. The windows of the halls reveal glimpses of trees, ponds, streams and corridors. The eaves of the halls and pavilions are decorated with dragons, dogs and elephants in an amusing arrangement The overall arrangement of the individual elements of the garden, from the placement of the trees and ponds to the halls and pavilions, is carefully planned so as to enhance the garden's harmony and ambience, yet nothing about this arrangement seems forced or unnatural.

In the past over 400 years, Yuyuan was restored and reopened several times. Because of the downfall of Pan's family after Pan Yunduan's death, Yuyuan was slowly out of use and was once in a mess. Although later the garden was renovated by the local rich people, several civil wars in the mid-19th century caused huge damage. In 1956, after Shanghai's liberation, the city government rebuilt the garden and recovered its elegance and beauty.

Yuyuan Garden was at last reopened to the public in 1961. Yuyuan Garden's Huxin Ting teahouse is very popular with locals and tourists alike, and there are numerous nearby kiosks and stalls that sell delicious Chinese snacks and desserts.

title: The Magical Elephant Trunk Hill
date: Thursday, 17 December 2009
time:23:20
The Magical Legend of the Elephant Trunk Hill (Guilin)
Shaped like a huge elephant drinking from the river with its trunk, Elephant Trunk Hill tops Guilin's hills. It's the symbol of Guilin landscape and one of the most visited attractions.

Elephant Trunk Hill is located between the southeast of Guilin City and the western bank of the Li River.Situated between the elephant's trunk and its torso is a large cave which is said to resemble a full moon drifting on the water, therefore it is named Water Moon Cave. On a clear night with a full moon, the moon in the sky above and the "moon" of Water Moon Cave seem to vie for one's attention, creating beautiful reflections on the river, a phenomenon that has been celebrated by Chinese poets and painters for centuries

The Elephant Trunk Hill is one of
Guilin's most recognizable landmarks. Exploring in the Elephant Trunk Hill Park, you will enjoy many charming sights, such as Water Moon Cave (Shui Yue Cave), Elephant Eye Cave, Puxian Pagoda, Yunfeng Temple (a building with ancient style), Love Island, Osmanthus Square and so on.

There is a legend tells that how Elephant Trunk Tree came about, In ancient time there is an elephant, which belonged to the Emperor of Heaven, came down to earth to help the people in their work. This angered the Emperor of Heaven, who stabbed the elephant while it was drinking at the river's edge and turned it to stone. The cave between the body and the trunk of this elephant figure is of a particularly interesting shape and has inspired poets and other writers, old and new, to engrave verses on its walls. The poems of Lo You, Fan Chengda, and other poets from different dynasties are of inestimable literary and archaeological value. On the top of the hill stands the Puxian Pagoda, erected during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and shaped as the handle of the dagger with which the elephant was killed.

This is how the
Elephant Trunk Hill came about, Elephant Trunk Hill is now one of the Famous Must Go Attractions in Guilin and its best known sight is its charming flavor of the sunrise and sunset that will arouse people's imagination

title: Big Wild Goose Pagoda
date: Wednesday, 16 December 2009
time:17:35

Situated in Da Ci'En (Great Kindness and Grace) Temple, about four kilometers from the urban center, Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of the most famous Buddhistpagodas in China. The Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) for the study of Buddhist scriptures. Although it has been attacked by centuries of weather, war and seismic activity, which destroyed most of the original material of the structure, a pagoda by this name and style still exists on the site.
A pagoda was built on the site in 589 A.D. in the Sui Dynasty. It was called Wu Lou (Five Storey) Temple. It was not until 648 A.D. that Li Zhi, then still a crown prince, sponsored a renovation project on the temple in memory of his mother's her kindness, after she suffered an early death. The temple then assumed the present name: Temple of Kindness and Grace. When Li Zhi became the Tang Emperor Gaozong, he was said to pay homage to his mother twice a day by looking towards the temple from Hanyuan Palace, built in 663.

The temple once had 13 separate courtyards and contained 1,879 magnificent-looking rooms. It was a place of grand dimensions in the Tang Dynasty. However, it went into gradual decay after the dynasty's downfall. The halls and rooms that have survived to this day are structures that were built in the Ming Dynasty. The Tang regime gave orders to build a chamber for the translation of Buddhist scriptures in an effort to have the then widely renowned Master Xuanzang agree to be the head of the temple. Xuanzang was a Buddhist monk who travelled to India, translated Sanskrit scriptures and developed theories of conciousness, karma and rebirth that were adopted by some later popular schools of Buddhism.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda was finished in 652 A.D. Its five storeys were 60 meters in height. The decay of the earth-cored pagoda made necessary the new construction of a new 10-storey pagoda from 701 to 704 A.D. However, the winds of war in the years to come, not to mention a massive earthquake in 1556, reduced the pagoda almost to ruins, which in turn resulted in the construction of a 7-storey, 64 meter-tall structure in the later Ming Dynasty, which still stands today.

The storeyed pagoda is an architectural marvel. It was built with layers of bricks without any cement. The bracket style used in traditional Chinese architecture was also used in the construction of the pagoda. The seams between each layer of bricks and the " prisms' on each side of the pagoda are clearly visible. The grand body of the pagoda with its solemn appearance, simple style and high structure, is indeed a good example of
Chinese traditional architecture.

Lying at the center of Beijing, theForbidden City, called Gu Gong in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the world's largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 rooms.

The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park. The distance between these two gates is 960 meters, while the distance between the gates in the east and west walls is 750 meters. There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside.

The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Harbin Holidays -- Enjoy Special Frozen Beauty Cities
Located on the bank of Songhua River, Harbin is the capital and largest city of Helongjiang Province, northeastern China. It has a population around 10 millions with half of that at urban districts. Often nicknamed as "Oriental Moscow" or "Oriental Paris" for the erecting Western architecture at downtown, Harbin grew with the arrival of the far-east Railway, constructed by the Russians in the late 19th century. Flooded by White Russian refugees after 1917, Harbin had one of the largest European populations in East Asia. Most of the Europeans left the city following the rise to power of the Chinese Communists in 1946. In the city, you will see quite a few Western style buildings of Gothic, Baroque and Byzantine architectures built by the Russians and other Europeans.

Travelers are faced with frequently cold and inhospitable climates, but comforted by a warm and friendly population, increasing huge and stark skyscrapers, but also winding streets of quaint, colonial architecture, and impressive Siberian Tiger conservation policies that are somewhat offset by hunting grounds where a variety of animals are killed for pleasure. These contradictory scenes continue back in time, so that the history of Harbin is one of turbulence and economic prosperity.

Every year starting from January 5 and lasting for one month, it is the Harbin's Ice and Snow Festiva (since 1985), lots of celebrations will be held during the period. Many tourists from home and abroad come to visit this legendary "Ice City". Now the "Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival" has become one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival.

In terms of fun, the best sight to visit in the city proper would have to be the Sun Island Park which, besides relaxation, also houses the Siberia Tiger Park, designed to cultivate and then release these beautiful, endangered beasts back to the wild. There is also the Jile Temple, one of the four largest Buddhist temples in northeast China. Out of town are the more active sights, and many coming to Harbin are here for the skiing or hunting. Harbin boasts China's largest and most well-facilitated skiing region, the Yabuli Ski Resort, which hosted the 1996 Asian Winter Games.

Must go Attractions in Harbin.

1. Yabuli Ski Resort - Surrounded by imposing mountain ranges lavishly covered with pine forests, it is currently the largest and facilitated skiing resort in China. Besides the spectacular view, wild animals are also frequent sights on the resort.

2. Sun Island Park - Sun Island in winter is really a fancy world in fairy tales. This natural island is the biggest recreational center in Harbin and as such can be highly popular in the summer months and during Snow Carving Festival.

3. Central Street - The largest and longest pedestrian street in Asia. This long corridor of European architectural art is the pride of every Harbiner. It provides an enthralling destination which abounds with history, attracting tourists from home and abroad.

4. Siberia Tiger Park - It is the largest wild natural reserve in the world dedicated to the Northeast China Tiger and is known as the King of the Forest. In the 1980's, it was listed as one of the first-class national protected animals of China.

5. Wudalianchi Scenic Area - Situated in Wudalianchi City in northwestern Heilongjiang Province, the Wudalianchi Scenic Area is a famous volcanic field and tourist attraction with a unique and typical volcanic landscape.

title: Zhouzhuang Ancient Water Town
date:
time:00:18

Known as the 'Venice of the Orient' and China's oldest water town,Zhouzhuang was even bestowed the title of number one waterside town in China by overseas press. It is noted for its profound cultural background, the well-preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions and customs.

Zhouzhuang, known as the "Venice of the Orient", is located in Jiangsu province,The town is situated between Suzhou and Shanghai, 30 km the southeast of Suzhou and 60 km the southwest of Shanghaiwhich is also known as the "Paris of the Orient", and is China's oldest water town. Zhouzhuang Town boasts all the beautiful features of a Chinese waterside town. Zhouzhuang was even bestowed the title of number one waterside town in China by overseas press.

Dubbed 'Venice of the East', this town boasts the best water town preserved in China. The town has a history of over 900 years and most of residencies and houses in the town were built in Ming (1368-1644) or Qing Dynasties (1644-1911).The rivers and streams in Zhouzhuang crisscross the town and are spanned by 14 stone-arch bridges constructed in Yuan (1271-1368), Ming, and Qing Dynasties. Many thanks to these waterways, the town avoided the chaos that might be caused by wars in the past dynasties and most of its architectural layouts have eventually remained intact.

There are many fantastic places and views to visit and see, including Twin Bridges, Fuan Bridge, Shen House, Milou Tower, and more. Many bridges in the town show unique bridge traditions different from other designs. The most amazing view displays a house where a boat can enter the property through the front gate and sail through the courtyard.

The public was aware of the beauty of Zhouzhuang in 1985 after the painting, the Remembrance of My Hometown, by Chen Yifei, was presented to Deng Xiaoping, the China's most respected political veteran, by Mr. Armand Hammer, chairman the board of the Occidental Petroleum Corporation of the United States.

The town has been listed with the highest ranking of 5-AAAAA among the national tourist attractions, and in 2001 Zhouzhuang hosted the Informal Trade Ministerial Conference of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. This year the town has once again been selected as one of the top 50 China's tourist attractions in a nationwide survey. There are more than 1 million tourists visiting the small water town each year.
